Using Technology Wisely for Non-Tech-Savvy Trainers

Conducting training courses in today's digital age can seem daunting, but fear not – with a little guidance, even the least tech-savvy among us can harness the power of technology to enhance our training sessions.

Technology like any learning or training resource should be selected and used only if it will enhance or support the learning experience. Don't be pressured into making lengthy PowerPoint presentations just because someone said it's essential. The inappropriate or irrelevant use of technology like any resources can quickly cause your learners to lose focus. The use of even the simplest technology can be a great resource as long as it is used correctly.'

So, let's dive in and explore some simple yet effective ways to incorporate technology into your training courses and know what technology to avoid.

1. Start Small

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the plethora of tech tools out there, don't worry – you're not alone! Start small by incorporating just one or two tech tools into your training sessions. Whether it's using PowerPoint for presentations or sending emails to communicate with your trainees, taking small steps can help build your confidence and familiarity with technology.

2. Explore User-Friendly Platforms

Not all tech tools are created equal, and some are more user-friendly than others. Look for platforms and tools that are designed with simplicity in mind, such as Google Docs for creating and sharing documents, or Zoom for conducting virtual training sessions. These platforms often offer intuitive interfaces and step-by-step guides to help you get started.

3. Seek Training and Support

Don't hesitate to seek out training and support resources to help you navigate the world of technology. Many tech companies offer free tutorials, webinars, and support forums to help users learn how to use their products. Additionally, consider reaching out to tech-savvy colleagues or friends for guidance and assistance.

4. Embrace Collaborative Tools

Collaboration is key in today's training landscape, and technology can help facilitate it. Platforms like Microsoft Teams and Slack allow trainers and trainees to communicate and collaborate in real-time, whether they're working on group projects or sharing resources. Embracing these collaborative tools can enhance engagement and productivity in your training courses.

Now, let's shift gears and talk about what to avoid in the vast wilderness of training tech:

1. Overly Complex Tools

While some tools promise to revolutionise your learning experience, they can end up overwhelming you with their complexity if you are not tech-savvy. It is important to find a balance between utilising technology while also ensuring that it does not detract from the overall teaching ability.

2. Isolated Learning Environments

Beware of tools that isolate you from human interaction. While technology can enhance learning, nothing beats the value of face-to-face interaction and collaboration with peers and mentors.

3. One-Size-Fits-All Solutions

Every learner is unique, with different strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Avoid tools that offer a cookie-cutter approach to education and instead opt for customisable solutions that cater to your individual needs.

4. Reliable Sources

It's important to be cautious when using new platforms or software online. With so many options out there, it can be difficult to determine which companies are reliable and which ones aren't. It's a good idea to do some research on the company before downloading or using anything. Check out how long they've been in business and see if they have any ratings or reviews online. This will help you make an informed decision and avoid any potential issues. It is important to choose a product or service that offers great tech support to ensure a smooth and stress free experience.

5. Technology is Great – Until it Isn't.

Be prepared to adapt and improvise if technical issues arise during your training session. Have a backup plan in place, and don't be afraid to think on your feet to keep the learning experience on track.

Remember, while technology can be a powerful ally in your learning journey, it's essential to use it wisely. So, explore, experiment, and above all, have fun while mastering new skills and knowledge!
