The TAE50122 Diploma vs.TAE50116 & TAE50216 Diplomas: The Key Differences Explained

Diploma

The new TAE50122 Diploma of Vocational Education and Training is officially open for enrolment! It‘s important to note the TAE50122 Diploma of Vocational Education and Training supersedes, but is not equivalent to the TAE50116 Diploma of Vocational Education and Training and the TAE50216 Diploma of Training Design and Development.

In this blog, we’ll explore the key differences that distinguish this new diploma from its predecessors.

The Differences

The biggest differences between the diploma from the TAE22 Training Package and the diplomas from the TAE16 Training package, include:

Previously you could select from 2 different diplomas – Diploma of VET and/or Diploma of Training Design and Development.  The TAE50122 – Diploma of VET is a single diploma that offers 3 different specialisations - Advanced Training and Assessment; Design and Development, and VET Leadership

  • The TAE50116 and TAE50216 qualifications were comprised of 10 units. In contrast, the new TAE50122 qualification is made up of 12 units. Furthermore, there is a greater choice of electives than ever before, with only 3 core units and 9 electives forming the basis of the qualification.  The Electives are grouped according to the specialisations.  Five electives must be selected from the relevant specialisation group.

  • The TAE50116 and TAE50216 focused on experienced trainers and assessors and required evidence relating to their day-to-day roles, with some requirements for leading others. In contrast, the TAE50122 has elevated the assessment requirements of the units required in each specialisation, with a greater focus on leading others or leading the function.

Let's delve into each specialisation and where they can take you in your career.

Advanced Training and Assessment

This specialisation requires trainers and assessors to be involved in leading and mentoring other trainers and assessors. It also requires designing training and assessment strategies and ensuring the implementation of compliant training and assessment practices.

Those wishing to complete this specialisation need to be experienced trainers and assessors in the VET Sector (preferably with a minimum of 12 months' experience) with a full understanding of the training and assessment process.

This specialisation is ideal for those who want to be responsible for leading training and assessment services in roles such as:

  • Lead Trainer and Assessor
  • Head Teacher
  • RTO Manager
  • TAE trainer and assessor

Design and Development

This specialisation focuses on identifying training needs and then designing and developing learning resources (both print-based and e-learning) and developing assessments (including RPL).

Those wishing to complete this specialisation should have a good understanding of the VET sector, including knowledge of interpreting Training Packages and qualifications and an understanding of how people learn.

This is ideal for those who want to be responsible for designing & developing training and assessment strategies and compliant training content and assessments to meet these in roles such as:

  • Instructional Designer
  • E-learning Consultant
  • Resource or Assessment Developer

VET Leadership

This specialisation focuses on leading and managing within the VET sector. Although the role does not require current evidence of conducting training and assessment (although experience in training and assessing is beneficial), it requires a high level of knowledge and skills relating to the compliance requirements within the VET Sector.  The focus of this specialisation is on leading others and ensuring continuous improvements and compliance within an RTO.

VET Leadership is ideal for those wanting to be responsible for mentoring and leading VET teachers, trainers, and assessors and ensuring quality and compliance operations within an RTO in roles such as:

  • RTO manager
  • Head Teacher
  • Compliance Manager

Other Key Differences Explained

Entry Requirements:

Those wanting to complete the diploma need to be experienced VET Practitioners who have been working in the VET Sector (preferably for a minimum of 12 months) and hold a TAE Certificate IV qualification. This could be demonstrated in many ways, such as submitting resumes, letters of employment, work contracts, etc.

Some units within the TAE50122 Diploma of VET require learners to hold pre-requisite units from the TAE40116 or TAE40122 qualifications.  Please note that these pre-requisite units cannot be from older TAE qualifications such as the TAE40110 or earlier versions (TAA/BSZ).

The units in the TAE50122, along with the required pre-requisite unit, are listed below:

  • TAEDES511 - Design and develop strategies for training and assessment has a pre-requisite of TAEDES411 Use nationally recognised training products to meet vocational training needs (or its previous version TAEDES402 Use training packages and accredited courses to meet client needs)
  • TAEASS511 - Lead assessment requires the pre-requisite unit TAEASS412 Assess competence (or its previous version TAEASS402 Assess competence)
  • TAEDEL512 - Lead training facilitation requires the pre-requisite unit TAEDEL411 Facilitate vocational training (or its previous version TAEDEL401 Plan, organise and deliver group-based learning)
  • TAEASS511 - Lead assessment moderation and validation processes require the pre-requisite unit TAEASS413 Participate in assessment validation (or its previous version TAEASS403 Participate in assessment validation)

Unfortunately, if learners do not hold the pre-requisite unit, they will either need to select a different unit (with the exception of TAEDESS511, which is a core unit in the diploma of VET) OR  complete either the TAE40122 or the relevant pre-requisite units before enrolling for the diploma.
